Problem / Challenge

As part of their continuous improvement of production quality and monitoring of their equipment, car manufacturers in charge of engine production, seek to analyse the behaviour of an internal combustion engine. Several data are analysed:

  • 1 - Rocker arm positions
  • 2 - Stability of the engine camshaft
  • 3 - Overhead valve engine deviations
  • 4 - Float valve and valve lift analysis
  • 5 - Measurement of piston stroke
  • 6 - Study of the crank and bearing housing movement
  • 7 - Analysis of the engine mount behaviour
  • 8 - Adjustment of the engine's static seals

They are looking for a autonomous, reliable and robust measuring system for long-term use, even in difficult conditions (oil and fuel spillage, magnetic fields, radiation, etc.) capable of measuring each of these points (see diagram).

Solution PMI

The Kaman measuring systems KD2306, KD8206 and KD2446 meet this need. These non-contact eddy current displacement sensors measure distance, displacement or position. They measure the distance between the sensor face and metal objects, which may be magnetic or non-magnetic.

This technology, which does not physically contact the target to be measured, avoids any disturbance of the movement and prevents the exchange of energy.
