The mechanical strength of a structure or component is assessed by measuring the actual stresses, strains and forces it is subjected to on a fatigue test bench — under representative conditions, over time and with instrumentation that does not disturb the behaviour it measures. This data is what enables a design to be validated, a service life to be extended or the cause of premature failure to be identified.
