Checking for the presence of an internal thread in production

Checking for the presence of an internal thread in production

A part with missing or improperly tapped threads that reaches assembly can shut down an entire line. Detect the defect automatically at the end of machining, without slowing down the production rate.

Context and challenges

In mass production, every machined part must have a compliant internal thread before being sent to assembly. Manual inspection is incompatible with modern industrial rates and generates costly non-conformities downstream. Automatic detection at the end of the line is now a quality standard.

What needs to be measured

Presence or absence of thread, usable tapping depth — result directly usable as OK/NOK by the line PLC.

PM Instrumentation solution

The inspection system combines a ThreadChecker sensor with a signal conditioner and a PLC interface (digital or analog output). The sensor verifies the presence and geometry of the thread non-destructively, on every cycle. The signal is directly integrated into the line PLC; a local display completes the setup for operator monitoring. The system is configurable for different tapping dimensions.

Benefits

  • Automatic detection of non-compliant parts before assembly
  • Compatible with high production rates
  • Direct PLC integration (digital / analog)
  • Traceability of inspections for ISO quality requirements
  • Reduction of scrap and customer returns
